GCLA Teams

GCLA teams come in all shapes and sizes. There isn't any one "typical" GCLA team. Rather, each team is its own unique entity.

With the league spread out over various states, many teams are what are called "At-Large" teams. Such teams are full members of the GCLA, but schedule and compete as Independents within the league. Many teams are At-Large by choice due to scheduling reasons and customs, while others are for either competitive or geographical reasons.

However, where several teams are clustered geographically, conferences can be formed. GCLA conferences can lend our members a minimum number of guaranteed games against nearby rivals, plus a conference playoff at season's end.

In a league that can span several hundred miles in multiple directions, having one overall GCLA playoff is somewhat unworkable today. However, our conferences can each enjoy their playoff competition. The idea is to spread the sport, and to give as many teams the lacrosse experience they are seeking.

At-Large teams are fairly common in the GCLA, but efforts are ongoing to rebuild our conferences after the challenges faced since 2020. The Western Conference has been operating since 1997 and is centered around the Houston area. The Eastern Conference is rebuilding with teams from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, while the Southwest Conference is doing the same in areas of Texas to the west of Houston. We are always open to bringing in new teams and forming new conferences.

The idea is to have something for just about everybody. With that in mind, we believe we are serving the sport of lacrosse by fostering its growth in new areas, introducing new people and locations to this great sport.
